The 2022 Women’s NCAA Tournament has just 12 teams remaining. Four schools — South Carolina, Texas, Creighton and Stanford are on to the Elite Eight already, and four more teams will look to punch their tickets to the regional finals tonight. Among that group are No. 1 seeds NC State in the Bridgeport Region and Louisville in the Wichita Region, along with perennial favorite and Bridgeport Region No. 2 seed UConn, which has looked very sharp over the Huskies’ first two tournament wins.
The March Madness has been in full effect in both the men’s and women’s tournaments this year with No. 15 seed Saint Peter’s crashing the party in the men’s draw, and No. 10 seed Creighton a game away from its first Final Four on the women’s side. Here’s a quick preview of what looks to be an epic day of basketball Saturday in Wichita and Bridgeport.
- No. 1 seed NC State is off to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1998 after a 7-0 run to close the game and complete a stunning comeback to knock out Notre Dame. Elisa Cunane posted 16 points and 10 rebounds and Kai Crutchfield scored 14 points to go along with four steals. Notre Dame blew a 10-point third quarter lead and got outscored 20-10 in the fourth quarter.
- No. 2 seed UConn is heading to its 16th consecutive Elite Eight after taking down an experienced No. 3 seed Indiana. The Huskies shook off a subpar offensive performance in the second round to pick up a 17-point win over No. 3 seed Indiana in the Sweet 16. They had four starters score in double digits while the team as a whole shot at 46.3% from the field. Paige Bueckers and Christyn Williams led their offense with 15 points each. UConn is set to take on No. 1 seed NC State on Monday.
- No. 4 seed Tennessee survived a tough No. 12 seed Belmont team with a 70-67 win after giving blowing a 14-point lead. No. 1 seed Louisville earned its ticket to the Sweet 16 with a 68-58 win over the No. 9 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs behind a 29-point performance by Hailey Van Lith.
- The No. 10 seed South Dakota Coyotes look to be the second No. 10 seed to move on to the Elite Eight this year after Creighton pulled it off against Iowa State on Friday. The Coyotes earned their first Sweet 16 appearance in program history after a convincing 61-47 win over Baylor. They will now face No. 3 seed Michigan, as the Wolverines are in their second consecutive appearance in the Sweet 16. Michigan is coming off a 64-49 win over No. 11 seed Villanova.

End of 3rd quarter: Louisville 55, Tennessee 50
Louisville was up by as many as 14 points, but Tennessee came out of halftime with something to prove. The Lady Volunteers made it a single-digit game with better shooting and sharing the ball more. Tennessee only had two assists in the first two periods, but got five in the third quarter. Rae Burrell, who is currently leading all scorers with 16 points, hit a three-point shot with nine seconds left on the clock to cut the Tennessee deficit to only five points. Louisville cannot relax right now, as three starters — Cochran, Engstler and Smith — are entering the last period with three fouls.

Halftime: Louisville 39, Tennessee 28
Tennessee freshman forward Caroline Stripling made a jumper as the clock was running out to help her team enter halftime on a good note. However, the Louisville defense is holding the Lady Volunteers to under 30% shooting. Emily Engstler is leading the Cardinals offense with 12 points, which include three successful shots from beyond the arc. Louisville is shooting at 38.5% from three-point range, while Tennessee is trying to make some but is only 1-of-12 from there.

End of 1st quarter: Louisville 19, Tennessee 13
The No. 1 seed Louisville is just slightly outshooting No. 4 seed Tennessee 38.1%-35.3% from the field. Senior forward Emily Engstler scored seven points for the Cardinals in the first quarter. Louisville is speeding up the Lady Volunteers, who are struggling from beyond the arc going 1-of-8.

Final: UConn 75, Indiana 58
The No. 2 seed Huskies struggled offensively in the second round, but they shook it off and took care of No. 3 seed Indiana with a solid double-digit win in the Sweet 16. The third period was particularly strong for the Huskies as they outscored their opponent 22-13. Both teams shot above 45% from the field through the full game. UConn had four starters score in double digits with Page Bueckers and Christyn Williams leading their team with 15 points each. Senior forward Olivia Nelson-Ododa got her first double-double in an NCAA Tournament by registering 10 points and 14 rebounds. UConn is now heading to its 16th consecutive Elite Eight round.

End of 3rd quarter: UConn 59, Indiana 46
After a close second quarter, the Huskies came back from the break with more energy. UConn started the third period with a 16-0 run while holding the Hoosiers to no field goals until four minutes in. The Huskies were up by as many as 20 points, with three starters already in double figures. Sophomore guard Paige Bueckers leads UConn with 13 points. Indiana senior guard Ali Patberg leads all scorers with 14 points shooting 6-of-8 from the field.

Halftime: UConn 37, Indiana 33
Ali Patberg leads all scorers with 12 points for the Hoosiers — who are shooting 50% from the field — but offensive rebounds and turnovers have been the key to UConn’s lead. The Huskies have right offensive rebounds and have forced seven Indiana turnovers. Azzi Fudd has nine points on 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Paige Bueckers did head to the bench to get her knee looked at, but played normal minutes in the second quarter. The Huskies are leading the bench scoring battle, 9-0.
